"Kingdom" and "Church" in Frontier Missions

The call of the Kingdom seems to be resetting church and mission in this new generation. The terms 'Kingdom' and 'Church' are contested among ministries, yet they seem to be catalyzing exceptional and promising models across religious and cultural frontiers. The prism of contemporary Kingdom interpretation includes the transformation of societies, bringing justice to the nations, and the eradication of evil and disease. A younger generation marches to this Kingdom cadence, opting for new models of community, deeper devotion, and more holistic service. At ISFM 2011 a range of speakers will explore the interface of Kingdom, Church and Mission in frontier settings across the globe. Students and young adults are always welcome.

A short list of speakers at this time includes:

Sam Kamaleson on “The Kingdom Mandate”

(former Vice President of World Vision) will speak on the “gospel of the Kingdom” as it confronts the ethnic realities of India. From his years of experience with indigenous mission efforts in India, he calls for a Gospel among peoples that is both incarnational and transformational.

Martin Accad on “Kingdom and Church on the Arab Street”

Professor, Arab Baptist Seminary, Lebanon, and Fuller Theological Seminary, will speak from the varied contexts of the Arab world, where various models of Kingdom and Church vie amidst historic Muslim-Christian encounter.

David Hamilton on “Kingdom, Church and Mission Planning”

David has served for 30 years with YWAM and presently directs their Global Leadership Team at the University of the Nations in Hawaii. Drawing from YWAM’s organizational integration of evangelistic and transformational ministries over the last decade, David will identify the issues facing mission agencies in channeling a new generation to the frontiers.

Rick Brown on “The Kingdom amidst the Kaleidoscope of Religious Cultures”

Rick Brown is a Bible scholar and missiologist who has been involved in outreach across Africa and Asia since 1977. He will address the relationship of the Kingdom of God and the mission of God, and suggest how it can orient us in our ministry among other religious communities.

Darren Duersken on “The Church in the Hindu World”

Darren has worked with YWAM and the Mennonite Brethren Mission from England to India, and presently teaches Intercultural Studies at both Fuller Seminary and Fresno Pacific University. He is presently completing a PhD at Fuller on Yesu satsangs in Northwest India, and he will review his recent survey of five Christ-centered movements among Hindu populations.

International Society for Frontier Missiology

The purpose of the International Society for Frontier Missiology (ISFM) is the promotion of thinking and sharing on an international level in the area of missiology oriented toward a concern for the unfinished task. While we do not feel it is possible to be dogmatic about the precise meaning of “the Great Commission,” we do believe we should try to evaluate the various possible meanings of “the unfinished task.” We hope, furthermore, to evaluate goal statements both short- and long-term. The ISFM also seeks to promote intergenerational dialogue between senior and junior mission leaders and to cultivate an international fraternity of thought (involving both mission and church leaders) in the development of frontier missiology.
